BLOOMSBURG— Bloomsburg University presents journalist Michelle Garcia in Carver Hall's Gross Auditorium on Monday, Sept. 17 at 6 p.m. addressing issues impacting the LGBTQIA community.
Garcia is the senior editor for race and identities at Vox, a news and opinion website. At Vox, Garcia and her team cover culture, politics, and society through the lens of race, gender, sexuality and other identities. She previously worked as the identity editor for Mic, a digital news company.
Garcia also spent more than eight years at The Advocate starting as an editorial assistant and worked up to the role of managing editor. She covered:
- the fall of “don’t ask, don’t tell”
- the fight for marriage equality
- the full legal cycle behind Proposition 8
- the LGBTQIA sport movement
- and other topics related to the lives of LGBTQIA people
Additionally, she teaches at City University of New York’s graduate school of journalism’s social journalism program. Sponsors of Garcia's campus visit and talk are the Multicultural Center, the Women’s Resource Center, College of Education, and the LGBTQIA Commission.
