BLOOMSBURG— Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania has been awarded a $17,300 grant from Gov. Tom Wolf and the Pennsylvania Department of Education to support the “It’s on Us” campaign. The grant is part of nearly $1 million in funds earmarked in the 2017-2018 state budget for the campaign. The university is among 39 colleges and universities across the state to be selected for an “It’s On PA Us” grant.
“It’s on Us” is a national initiative to raise awareness about sexual assault; teaching participants that assault includes non-consensual sex, advising them on how to identify dangerous situations, empowering them to intervene, and urging them to create an environment of support for victims and survivors.
Bloomsburg University will utilize the grant money to develop therapeutic care packages and produce an educational campaign to inform the campus community about efforts to end sexual assault.
The therapeutic packages would be given to the survivors of sexual assault who often will have their bedding or other personal items collected as part of a Sexual Assault Forensic exam. The care package will be specifically designed to ensure greater anonymity and privacy for the students.
Also, a high-profile educational campaign will be created utilizing members of the campus community pledging to end sexual violence. Additionally, BU will augment an existing mandatory orientation program for incoming first-year students with the Catharsis Productions’ award-winning “Sex Signals,” a sexual assault prevention program.
“At Bloomsburg University we believe that even one instance of sexual misconduct is one too many,” said Albra Wheeler, coordinator of the BU Women’s Resource Center. “Bloomsburg University is committed to providing our students, faculty, and staff with a safe and supportive environment that is free from harm. With the grant funding, we will continue to augment our existing Huskies Don’t Harm initiative; which encourages everyone to become active in the fight against sexual assault. We believe in fostering safe communities through education, activism, and knowledge.”
The 2017-18 It’s On Us Pennsylvania grant recipients included both public and private, two-year and four-year institutions across the state.
Bloomsburg University is one of 14 universities in Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education. The university serves approximately 9,600 students, offering comprehensive programs of study in the colleges of Education, Business, Liberal Arts and Science and Technology.
