Business students advance in national bank competition

BLOOMSBURG—Bloomsburg University has been named as finalist in the nationwide 2017 Community Bank Case Study Competition, facilitated by the Conference of State Bank Supervisors.

BU's team — Keegan Carl, Michael Mintzer, Vicki Yackiel, Austin Golden, Kristopher Gross and videographer Benjamin Staub — is among five out of 33 teams advancing as finalists in the bank competition. Others include Iowa State University, Kutztown University, Texas Tech University and the University of Akron (OH).

BU is competing for a chance to win scholarship money, an opportunity to present their case at the CSBS-Federal Reserve Community Banking Research and Policy Conference, and an opportunity to have their work published. The first, second and third place winning teams will be announced Thursday, May 25 live via Twitter during the annual state and federal banking regulator forum in New Orleans. The top three teams will get an opportunity to have their reports published in a journal of case study research. The winning team will present their case study at the CSBS-Federal Reserve Community Banking in the 21st Century Research and Policy Conference in September.

The competition, which is open to undergraduate students in all fields of study, is an opportunity for students to gain valuable first-hand knowledge of the banking industry, and the opportunities and challenges facing today’s 21st century community banks. Each student team must develop an original case study that evaluates bank leadership succession planning and provides succession planning recommendations based on research.

BU's team is working with the staff at First Keystone Community Bank, Berwick, Pa.

For its submission, the BU team collaborated with First Keystone to conduct a case study and prepare a video showcasing the research. Students prepared a report of nearly 25 pages that included an executive summary and up to 10 pages in tables and charts thoroughly discussing the case study findings. In addition, student teams submitted a 10-minute video that highlighted the teams’ case study findings while showcasing the partnered community bank. All the work, including the video, had to be prepared by students.

A year ago, Bloomsburg University was one of 12 national finalists in the competition.
