For Immediate Release: Oct. 24, 2013

BU Players Avenue Q Production

BLOOMSBURG— The Bloomsburg University Players will present the comedic musical “Avenue Q” as their fall production. The show opens Thursday, Nov. 7, and continues Nov. 8 and 9 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 10, at 3 p.m. at the Alvina Krause Theater, 226 Center St., Bloomsburg.

Admission to “Avenue Q” is free with BU student ID, $12 for adults and $8 for seniors

Directed by David A. Miller, assistant professor of theatre, “Avenue Q” focuses on Princeton, a recent college graduate with a bachelor’s degree in English, on a mission to find his purpose in life. What he learns from his new neighbors on Avenue Q is that finding your purpose isn't easy and there will be some serious obstacles along the way.

The winner of the 2004 Tony Awards for Best Musical, Book of a Musical and Original Score, “Avenue Q” is sometimes referred to as a “Sesame Street with adult themes,” including human characters as well as puppets.  However, there are mature themes and content that make the show unsuitable for children.

The cast of the production is made up of BU students. There are also student designers for the set and lights, with costumes designed by theatre faculty Karen Anselm and guest professional Heath Hansum as sound designer. Alan Baker, professor of the music, serves as music director.

“There are many special qualities in this show for artists and for audiences alike,” said Miller. “The show is hilarious, even if sometimes shocking in its delivery, but with some really great, poignant questions. The music is so catchy you may find yourself singing the songs for a solid week after seeing the show.”

Advanced tickets are available at the Haas Box Office at 570-389-4340.

Bloomsburg University is one of 14 universities in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. BU serves approximately 10,000 students, offering comprehensive programs of study in the colleges of Education, Business, Liberal Arts and Science and Technology.
