BLOOMSBURG — Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania’s homecoming weekend celebration will kick off Saturday morning will the homecoming parade. The annual combined homecoming parade for BU and Bloomsburg High School will begin at 11 a.m. in the Bloomsburg Hospital parking lot along Lightstreet Road and continue to College Hill and Main Street, following Market Street to the ending point at the Town Park.
This year the grand marshal of the parade is Joseph Kelly, superintendant of the Bloomsburg Area School District. He is a 1973 graduate of BU and has spent 35 years working in the education field. Before becoming superintendant of Bloomsburg school district, he was a teacher and principal at Central Columbia School District. He received the 2008 Pennsylvania Association of School Administrators award for his dedication to education and plans to retire after this school year.
In addition to the homecoming courts of BU and Bloomsburg High School, the parade will feature approximately 10 BU floats and 12 BU student organizations. Marching along with the BU Huskies Marching Band and the Bloomsburg High School band will be community groups, such as the Special Olympics and the American Red Cross.
The BU Alumni Association will sponsor “Under the Big Top: Alumni House Tent Party” from noon until 3 p.m. at the Fenstemaker Alumni House. There will be food booths and raffle prizes to help celebrate BU’s new president, David L. Soltz, who will be inaugurated Friday, Oct. 31, at 10 a.m. in BU’s Student Recreation Center.
The BU football team will play their homecoming game against West Chester University at 3:30 p.m. in Redman Stadium. The game will be televised by SportsFever Television Network, which covers college and high school sporting events throughout Pennsylvania. Tickets for the football game are $8 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens. BU students with a valid ID get in free. The gates will open two hours before kickoff.
Saturday’s events will conclude with a hip-hop dance for BU students and alumni from 9:30 p.m. until 1 a.m. in the Kehr Union Ballroom. Tickets must be purchased in advance for the dance sponsored by the Program Board and Greek Life. Call (570) 389-3900 for more information.
On Sunday, the annual scholarship reception will be held in Kehr Union Ballroom from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the Shangri-La Chinese Acrobats will perform as part of the Celebrity Artist Series.
