BLOOMSBURG — Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania’s 2007-08 Celebrity Artist Series will conclude with a concert featuring Bobby Zankel & The Warriors of the Wonderful Sound on Friday, April 25, at noon in Haas Center for the Arts, Mitrani Hall.
Philadelphia-based Zankel and his band will perform for middle and high school students and the general public in conjunction with the ninth annual BU Jazz Festival. Zankel, a composer and saxophonist, leads a 14-member band that performs original modern jazz which mixes bebop with the soulful swing of Duke Ellington and Count Basie.
Zankel was born in Brooklyn and started performing in the early 1970s. He moved to Philadelphia in 1975 and has collaborated with writers, choreographers and performing artists to produce three ballets and one opera.
Zankel was awarded the Pew Fellowship for his writing in 1995 and formed Bobby Zankel & The Warriors of the Wonderful Sound in 2001. The band’s repertoire includes original works composed in the last 10 years.
