Gibble is new chair of BU’s Council of Trustees

BLOOMSBURG—Robert J. Gibble of Sinking Springs was named to a two-year term as chairperson of the Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania Council of Trustees during the quarterly meeting Wednesday, June 7. Previously vice chair, Gibble succeeds A. William Kelly of Kingston who served two terms as chair. Other officers are Steven B. Barth of Lewisburg, vice chair, and Marie Conley Lammando of Harrisburg, secretary. 

Gibble, a 1968 BU graduate, is managing partner of Beard Miller Co. and president of Gibble Consulting, both in Reading. Recipient of BU’s distinguished service award in 2000, he currently serves on the BU Foundation Board and is a former member of the BU College of Business Advisory Board as well as former treasurer and director of the Fund for the Advancement of the State System of Higher Education.

Active in both his local community and in state and national organizations, Gibble currently is a member of the Reading Hospital and Medical Center Board of Directors, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry. He formerly served as president of the Reading Chapter of the Pennsylvania Institute of CPAs, Berks County Mental Health Association, St. Joseph Hospital Development Corp. and Bomenann Health Services Inc. 

Following appointment of the new officers for 2006-08, BU President Jessica Kozloff ended the meeting by announcing that she will retire in December 2007. Kozloff said she believes BU is ready for a change and the infusion of energy that a new president will bring. She and her husband, Steve, are ready for a change as well, she said, and look forward to moving to their retirement home in Arizona where they will be closer to their two married children and four grandchildren.

Also during the meeting, the Trustees:

- Adopted the resolution that formally approves the condition and care of university buildings and grounds. The resolution, enacted each year after the Trustees’ inspection of facilities, will be forwarded to the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education office.

- Agreed to name the driveway adjacent to the Fenstemaker Alumni House as “Hippenstiel Drive” in honor of former director of alumni affairs Doug Hippenstiel, who retired in March after 26 years of service.

- Recommended acceptance of the capital project prioritization, an annual update that becomes part of the PASSHE five-year plan. The top four projects on the university’s “wish list” and their estimated costs are: Bakeless Hall renovation, $3.75 million; Nelson Field House renovation, $14.85 million; Sutliff Hall addition, $8.1 million; and Waller Administration Building renovation, $9 million.

- Learned that a feasibility study is under way regarding possible renovation of Redman Stadium. Factors being considered include building code issues, uses for space under the stadium, installation of artificial turf and an upgrade of lighting and the press box.

- Heard a report about on-campus student housing. Although BU’s room fees are among the lowest in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, facilities are stretched to meet student demands, according to Linda Sowash, director of residence life. For fall 2006, BU staff expects to house 490 students over capacity; housing isn’t available for an additional 225 students who expressed interest in living on campus. A housing feasibility study is looking at student needs and preferred amenities, like an increased number of bathrooms and additional common space in residence halls, and funding options.

Bloomsburg University is one of 14 universities in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. The university serves approximately 8,000 students and offers 65 bachelor’s, 18 master’s and one doctoral degree.
