Bloomsburg University Cross Country Teams Going for PSAC Titles
BLOOMSBURG- The Bloomsburg University men's and women's cross country teams will compete at Lock Haven University for the 2008 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championships. The men's championship race, an 8K event, starts at 11 a.m., followed by the women's race, a 6K event, at noon.
The Bloomsburg University women's team is the defending PSAC champion, but come into this race as an underdog. Several key runners for the Huskies, Andrea Kellock (Lansdale/North Penn) and Beth Schwing (Hershey/Lower Dauphin), have battled injuries all season which has interfered with their training.
"Andrea and Beth have not raced every meet this season but at this point are ready to go give their best for the team effort," said coach Karen Brandt. "Also, Angela Borealo (Easton/Easton) just recently has had a slight problem develop but showed well at the Penn State meet so appears to be back in form. We also are in the unusual position that we've not raced with a full varsity contingent the entire season. Ironically the first time we are going to race full strength is this weekend at the championship meet. The women appear undaunted, however, with a very positive outlook and attitude. They are pumped and ready to go show what they can do."
The Bloomsburg men are looking to improve on last year's fifth-place finish. Leading the way for the Huskies will be seniors Mike Dalton (Lake Hopatcong, NJ/Pope John XXIII) and Jim Stockley (Elverson/Twin Valley).
"Outside of Dalton and Stockley, the remainder of the team will be filled by a relatively young squad of freshmen and sophomores," Brandt continued. "It's been a bit of a rocky season for junior Misha Litvinov (Drums/Hazleton Area) who has experienced a number of small, but persistent injuries and setbacks throughout the season. This is unfortunately as Misha had put in a fantastic summer of training and now might not be able to totally capitalize on it for himself and the team. We do look strong, however, and have closed in on several conference teams during regular season competitions that will be key for us on Saturday."
"As coaches, we are really proud again this year that the dominate theme has been "team" rather than "individual"," said Brandt. "These athletes run many miles together in all sorts of weather and a special bond forms. However, it would still be easy to worry more about one's place in the lineup rather than giving one's best for the betterment of the team score. Both men's and women's teams have maintained a wonderful combination of competitiveness and camaraderie throughout the season which we know will serve them will not only this weekend but next weekend at the Atlantic region meet."
The PSAC championships will feature 10 runners from each team instead of the previous nine members per school.
Competing for the Bloomsburg women will be: Borealo; Caitlin Heller (Bloomsburg/Bloomsburg); Shannon Hoffman (Watsontown/Warrior Run); Christa Johnson (Nescopeck/Berwick); Kellock; Katie McShay (Springfield/Cardinal O'Hara); Katie Meck (Dillsburg/Northern); Samantha Rhood (Downingtown/Downingtown West); Schwing and Ashley Shuck (Milton/Milton).
Competing for the Bloomsburg men will be: Jared Arnold (Philadelphia/G.W. Carver); Dalton; Ryan Evans (Mechanicsburg/Mechanicsburg); Bob Furman (Broomall/Marple Newtown); Litvinov; Auston Martzall (Myerstown/ELCO); Dave Moyer (Boyertown/Boyertown Area); Connor Showalter (Media/Penncrest); Dan Sietsma (Mahwah, NJ/Easter Christian) and Stockley.
