MECHANICSBURG -- Bloomsburg University women's swimmer Ashley Yelinek (Youngwood/Southmoreland) defended her conference title in the 1650 free event on Sunday at the 2006-07 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Swimming Championships at Cumberland Valley High School.
Yelinek, a senior, swam to a time of 17:44.24, over six seconds faster than her seed time. Yelinek opened the 34-lap race with a split of 29.06 seconds and finished with a lap time of 31.75 seconds.
Also, Dianna Smith (West Grove/Avon Grove) took second in the 100-free in a school-record and NCAA championship qualifying time of 52.31 seconds. Smith broke her own school mark of 52.77 seconds set earlier this season. In addition, Allie Reed (Selinsgrove/Selinsgrove) took seventh in the event in a time of 53.59 seconds.
In the 200-backstroke, Laura Jeffers (Spring/Perkiomen Valley) was fourth in 2:11.60, while in the 200-backstroke, Laura Sterkenberg (Lancaster/Hempfield) in 2:14.69.
In relay action, the women's 400-free relay team of Reed, Jackie Gribbin (Richboro/Council Rock North), Courtney Dean (Lancaster/Hempfield) and Smith qualified for the NCAA championships after finishing second in a time of 3:32.81, less than a second off the school record.
For the men, Kyle Weisenbach (Lincoln University, PA/Avon Grove) was ninth in the 200-breaststroke in 2:15.37 and 12th in the 1650 free in 17:12.52. Steve Withers (Doylestown/Central Bucks West) also took 12th in the 200-backstroke in a time of 2:00.96.
