Rick Schmelyun Takes Second at Southern Scuffle

GREENSBORO, NC-Bloomsburg University wrestler Rick Schmelyun (New Oxford/Bermudian Springs) took second place at 165 pounds to help lead the Huskies to an eighth place finish at the 2009 Southern Scuffle Tournament in Greensboro, NC.

The Huskies totaled 74 points with Cornell University winning the team title with 164 points.

Schmelyun, ranked 18th at 165 pounds, started off the day by beating 13th-ranked Paul Young of Indiana by major decision, 12-2, in the quarterfinals. In the semi-finals Schmelyun faced off against EWL-rival Jarrod King of Edinboro, ranked number two in the country, who beat the Huskies senior 4-0 at the PSAC championships earlier this month. However, this time out Schmelyun went on to completely dominate King by a score of 15-2 to reach the finals.

In the finals Schmelyun faced off against the top ranked 165 pounder in the country, Dustin Schlatter of Minnesota, and lost by a score of 6-1. Schlatter had two takedowns, an escape and picked up a point for riding time to earn the win.

At 157 pounds Matt Moley (Phoenixville/Spring Ford) finished fourth for the Huskies. Moley, the two-time All-American, started the day with a 3-1 loss to 10th-ranked Kurt Kinser of Indiana. Dropping down to the consolation round Moley came back and beat 18th-ranked Dan Gonsor of Virginia by a score of 7-5 in the semi-final round. In the consolation final Moley lost to Bryce Saddonis, ranked 16th in the country, by a score of 8-1.

Taking sixth place for the Huskies at 149 pounds was Frank Hickman (Castle Hayne, NC/E. L. Laney). The red-shirt freshman worked his back through the consolation bracket.

The Huskies will make their first home appearance of the season on Tuesday, Jan. 5 at 7 p.m. taking on Sacred Heart University.
