Huskies Fall to to No. 18 Pitt Panthers

BLOOMSBURG-The Bloomsburg University wrestling team opened its Eastern Wrestling League season with a 23-12 loss to number 18-ranked Pittsburgh Panthers on Sunday at the Nelson Field House.

The Panthers started quickly in the match opening up a 10-0 lead after three bouts. The Huskies, though, rallied and got a 6-1 win from Josh Roosa (Mountain Top/Crestwood); a major decision from Matt Moley (Phoenixville/Spring-Ford) and a pin from Rick Schmelyun (New Oxford/Bermudian Springs) to take a 13-10 lead with four bouts remaining.

But Pitt came back with three wins by decision and one by major decision to post a 23-12 win (Bloomsburg was penalized one team point after the 174 pound bout).

Bloomsburg falls to 8-5 with the loss, while Pitt improves 11-1-1, 2-0 in the EWL. Bloomsburg wrestles at West Virginia on Sunday, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m.

Bout-by Bout Recap

125-Pitt's Anthony Zanetta took a 7-1 lead after one period getting two takedowns, a two-point near fall, and one point for stalling on Bloomsburg's James Bak. In the second period Bak scored a reversal and a takedown to pull to within 8-5 heading to the third period. In the third Zanetta scored an early escape and a takedown on his way to a 12-6 win.

133-Pitt's Jimmy Conroy opened the match with Bloomsburg's Jason Guffey by getting a takedown and riding Guffey for over a minute and 50 seconds to lead 2-0 after one period. In the second period Conroy rode Guffey for nearly period although in the final 30 seconds Guffey was awarded two points, one for Conroy stalling and one for a technical violation for pushing Guffey out of the bounds. Guffey then scored an escape at the buzzer to lead 3-2 after two periods. In the third Conroy escaped to start the period, then scored a go-ahead takedown with 40 seconds to wrestle. Guffey escaped right before the buzzer but with riding time Conroy won 6-4.

141-Pitt's Tyler Nauman opened with a takedown and rode Bloomsburg's Frank Hickman for a 1:50. In the second period Nauman escaped to neutral 40 seconds into the period, then scored a takedown with less than 20 seconds remaining in the period to lead 5-0 after two periods. Nauman made it 7-0 in the third with a takedown and with riding time won 8-0.

149-There was no scoring in the first period between the Huskies Josh Roosa and Pitt's Eric Albright. In the second period Roosa escaped in the first five seconds for the first points of the match, then scored a takedown with under a minute to go to lead 3-0 after two. At neutral in the third, Roosa scored a takedown before Albright escaped with just over a minute left. There was no further scoring and with riding time Roosa won 6-1.

157-Bloomsburg's Matt Moley got on the board first with a takedown of Pitt's Donnie Tasser before Trasser escaped. Moley scored a late takedown to lead 4-1 after one period. In the second, Moley scored three takedowns to lead 10-5 after two periods. Moley added three takedowns and one point for riding time to win 17-6.

165-Bloomsburg's Rick Schmelyun was in total control from the start and scored a takedown and two, three-point near falls before pinning Pitt's Adam Counterman in 1:35.

174-There was no scoring in the first period between Bloomsburg's Nate Graham and Pitt's David Sullivan. To start the second Sullivan escaped early in the period to lead 1-0 after two periods. Graham started on bottom to begin the third, but could not work out of the hold of Sullivan and lost 2-0. Bloomsburg was also penalized one team point for unsportsmanlike conduct.

184-Pitt's Zac Thomusseit scored two first period takedowns to lead 4-1 after one period over Bloomsburg's Derek Coffey. There was no scoring in the second period with Thomusseit riding Coffey for the entire period. In the third period, Thomusseit worked a late escape and won 7-1 with riding time.

197-There was no scoring in the first period between Bloomsburg's Brian Shaw and the Panthers Matt Wilps. In the second Wilps escaped early in the period to go up 1-0. Wilps then got a takedown before Shaw escaped for a 3-1 lead. Shaw escaped to start the third, but Wilps was able to hold off any more scoring attempts for a 3-2 victory.

285-Pitt's Ryan Tomei scored two first period takedowns against the Huskies' Zac Walsh and led 4-2 after one period. In the second period Tomei pushed his lead to 6-4 with a takedown with Walsh getting two escapes. Tomei escaped to start the third, then got a takedown to lead 9-4. Walsh escaped with less than a minute to go, but Tomei got a takedown and near fall in the closing seconds and with riding time won 14-5.
