Graham Takes Second at Navy Classic
ANNAPOLIS, MD- Nate Graham (Selkirk, NY/Ravena) finished second at 174 pounds to lead the Bloomsburg University wrestling team to a fourth place finish (of nine teams) at the Navy Classic in Annapolis, MD on Saturday. The Huskies had eight place winners and finished with 107 points to 137 for the Naval Academy which won the event. Bloomsburg was without its two-time All-American Matt Moley (Phoenixville/Spring-Ford) who missed the event due to his wrestling in the NWCA All-Star Classic on Sunday in Fullerton, CA.
Graham won his first two matches of the day to reach the finals against top seed Shane Riccio of Bucknell ranked 10th in the country. In the final Graham wrestled tough, but lost by a 2-0 score.
Three Huskies Josh Roosa (Mountaintop/Crestwood) at 149-pounds, Rick Schmelyun (New Oxford/Bermudian Springs) at 165-pounds and 184-pounder Derek Coffey (Lewisburg/Lewisburg) had third place finishes for the day. Roosa reached the semi-finals with a win by fall and a major decision. After losing in the semi's Roosa posted two wins by decision to finish third.
Schmelyun reached the semi-finals with two wins by major decision, then, lost to eventual champion Peter Handley of Navy in the semi's. Dropping down to the consolation round Schmelyun then posted two more wins by major decision, including a 13-5 win over Matt Epperly of Virginia Tech in the third place bout.
Coffey won his first match of the day and dropped his second forcing him to work through the consolation bracket. Four wins later, including a 3-2 win in the consolation finals, gave Coffey a third place finish.
In addition, 125-pounder Jason Guffey (Muncy/Warrior Run) was fourth as was 157-pounder Bryce Bussler (Mechanicsburg/Cumberland Valley) and 197-pounder Jake Dabashinsky (Schuylkill Haven/Schuylkill Haven) Heavyweight Zac Walsh (Deville, NY/Morris Knolls) finished fifth for the Huskies.
The Huskies wrestle in Albany, NY at the Northeast Duals on Saturday.
