Matt Moley Selected for NWCA All-Star Event
BLOOMSBURG-- Bloomsburg University wrestler Matt Moley (Phoenixville/Spring-Ford) has been selected to participate in the National Wrestling Coaches Association's (NWCA) All-Star Classic to be held in Fullerton, Ca. on Sunday, Nov. 22.
Moley, a senior who wrestles at 157 pounds, is ranked second in the country at his weight by Wrestling Insider Newsmagazine (WIN). He is a two-time All-American earning a sixth place finish last year as a junior after an eighth place finish as a sophomore. A year ago, Moley, who was ranked in the top 10 of his weight class all season long, led the Huskies with a record of 36-8, including a dual meet record of 12-1. Of his 36 wins, 21 (more than 58 percent) came by way of fall, technical fall or major decision. At the Eastern Wrestling League championships Moley captured his first EWL title with a win over his long-time rival from Edinboro who came into the event ranked number one in the country and undefeated. Moley earned an 8-5 win and was named the Outstanding Wrestler of the event. He was also named the EWL Wrestler of the Week on Nov 30th. He will enter his senior year just two wins shy of 100 and just 28 wins shy of setting a new school record for career victories.
Bloomsburg head coach John Stutzman is thrilled for Moley.
It's a great honor to wrestle in this event," said Stutzman. "This is great for the Bloomsburg, our team and for Matt who has worked extremely hard and it is a honor that is well deserved."
Moley will be the seventh wrestler from Bloomsburg to participate in the NWCA All-Star Classic. Ron Russo was the first Bloomsburg selection in the 1969 event and posted an 11-5 win over Len Groom of Northern Colorado. In 1974 the late Shorty Hitchcock lost his bout 5-3 to Mel Renfro of Washington State, while in 1981 Don Reese tied Jim Gibbons of Iowa State 6-6. In 1985 the Huskies had both Ricky and Rocky Bonomo take part in the Classic. Ricky lost 7-1 to Mark Perry of Oklahoma State with Rocky falling to Barry Davis of Iowa, 20-9. In 1989 Dave Morgan was the last Bloomsburg wrestler to take part in the event losing to Joe Pantaleo of Michigan, 6-1.
The NWCA All-Star Classic is an All-Star wrestling dual pitting the top collegiate wrestlers in the nation against each other in a showcase that is often a preview of the NCAA Division I Championships. The event will include 10 collegiate weight classes along with several local feature bouts involving college wrestlers. This year's event will be held at Cal State Fullerton's Titan Gym.
