Bloomsburg University Wrestling Team Loses to Clarion

BLOOMSBURG-The Bloomsburg University wrestling team lost to Clarion University by a score of 22-17 on Friday in an Eastern Wrestling League matchup.

After Bloomsburg fell behind 13-3 through four matches, the Huskies rallied with a wins by Matt Moley (Phoenixville/Spring-Ford) (decision) at 157; Rick Schmelyun (New Oxford/Bermudian Springs) (technical fall) at 165; and Nate Graham (Selkirk, NY/Ravena) (fall) at 174 pounds to grab a 17-13 lead.

The Golden Eagles, though, would rally and posted wins in the final three matches to score a 22-17 win. The evening came down to a battle of the heavyweights and Clarion's Quintas McCorkle scored a 2-1 win, getting the go-ahead point on a stalling call against Bloomsburg's Zac Walsh (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls).

The Huskies fall to 8-7, 0-3 in the EWL, with the loss and will host Cleveland State on Sunday at 1 p.m.


125--Clarion's Joe Waltko took a 4-0 lead after one period over Bloomsburg's James Bak with a takedown and a two-point near fall. Waltko started the second period with an escape, then scored a another takedown before getting Bak on his back and scoring a win by fall.

133--Bloomsburg's Jason Guffey scored a first period takedown on Clarion's Jay Ivanco to lead 2-0 after three minutes. In the second Guffey scored a reversal before Ivanco escaped to make it 4-2 after two periods. There was no scoring in the third period with Guffey earning a 5-2 win with riding time.

141--Clarion's Greg Lewis led 2-0 after one period on Bloomsburg's Ian Desole by scoring a takedown midway through the period. Lewis started the second with a three-point near fall and added a point for stalling by Desole to lead 6-0 heading to the final period. In the third period Lewis scored two takedowns to one for Desole to win by a score of 12-2.

149--There was no scoring in the first period between Bloomsburg's Josh Roosa and Clarion's James Fleming. In the second Roosa scored a takedown 30 seconds in to lead 2-0. Fleming scored a reversal to tie the score at 2-2 through two periods. Fleming chose down to start the third and escaped to lead 3-2. Fleming then held off Roosa the rest of the match to win 3-2.

157--In a battle of ranked wrestlers there was no first period scoring between Bloomsburg's Matt Moley and Clarion's Hadley Harrison. Moley started the second with an escape for the only scoring of the period. Moley started the third on top and scored a two-point near fall to lead 3-0 then worked a three-point near fall to go up 6-0. Harrison escaped with one second left and with riding time Moley posted a 7-1 win.

165-- Bloomsburg's Rick Schmelyun scored a quick takedown against Clarion's Nick Milano to lead 2-0 just seconds into the match. Later Schmelyun scored two, three-point near falls and a three-point near fall and one point for stalling by Milano for a 10-0 lead after one period. Schmleyun scored two more near falls in the second period and with riding time won by technical fall, 18-0.

174--Bloomsburg's Nate Graham opened his match with Steven Cressley of Clarion with a takedown. Cressley worked an escape with 1:10 left in the first before Graham got another takedown with less than 30 seconds left in the first to lead 4-1 after one period. Graham escaped to start the second, then scored another takedown to lead 7-1 midway through the period. Graham then put Cressley on his back and finally worked the win by fall in 4:45.

184--Clarion's Clint Podish scored the first points in the match-up with Bloomsburg's Derek Coffey with a takedown and led 2-0 after one period. Coffey then worked an escape midway through the second period to pull to within 2-1 before Podish scored a takedown with less than 10 seconds remaining in the period. In the third Coffey was riding Podish, when Podish scored a reversal and won 6-1.

197--Clarion's Alex Thomas jumped out to 4-0 lead over Bloomsburg's Brian Shaw after one period. There was no scoring in the second period. In the third Thomas worked an escape to lead 5-0 before Shaw got a point for stalling on Thomas. The final was 6-1 Walsh.

285--With the match in the hands of the heavyweights, Bloomsburg's Zac Walsh and Clarion's Quintas McCorkle battled through a scoreless first period. In the second period Walsh started with an escape to get the first point of the match for the only score of the frame. McCorkle took down to start the third and worked an escape 15 seconds in to tie the score. Later in the period, McCorkle was awarded a point for stalling by Walsh and led 2-1 with a minute to go. Neither wrestler scored the rest of the way and McCorkle scored a 2-1 victory.
