Bloomsburg Wrestling Names Captains for 2009-10 Season
BLOOMSBURG-Bloomsburg University wrestling coach John Stutzman has announced the captains for the 2009-10. Named to the role are Matt Moley (Phoenixville/Spring-Ford), Jason Guffey (Muncy/Warrior Run), Ricky Schmelyun (New Oxford/Bermudian Springs), and Brian Shaw (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg).
Moley, a 157-pounder, is a two-time All-American earning a sixth place finish last year as a junior after an eighth place finish as a sophomore. A year ago, Moley, who was ranked in the top 10 of his weight class all season long, led the Huskies with a record of 36-8, including a dual meet record of 12-1. Of his 36 wins, 21 (more than 58 percent) came by way of fall, technical fall or major decision. At the Eastern Wrestling League championships Moley captured his first EWL title with a win over his long-time rival from Edinboro who came into the event ranked number one in the country and undefeated. Moley earned an 8-5 win and was named the Outstanding Wrestler of the event. He was also named the EWL Wrestler of the Week on Nov 30th. He will enter his senior year just two wins shy of 100 and just 28 wins shy of setting a new school record for career victories.
Guffey, a 125-pounder, wrestled at 133 pounds last season for Bloomsburg and posted a mark of 27-16 a year ago. He was named the EWL wrestler of the week on Feb. 1 after he posted two wins in victories over Clarion and Cleveland State. In the match with Clarion he won by a 6-0 decision, then, posted a first period fall against Cleveland State. At the PSAC championships, Guffey took third and was fourth at the EWL championships.
Schmelyun, who wrestles at 165-pounds, posted a mark of 32-15 as junior and qualified for the NCAA championships for the first time in his career. He was one of the leaders in Division I lead for pins in his weight class with 15. Among his 15 pins were five in less than a minute, including one in 38 seconds. During the season Schmelyun finished fifth at the EWL championships and was second in the PSAC championships. For his career, he is 88-48.
Shaw is the Huskies 184 pounder. A year ago he posted a record of 12-20 seeing action at both the 174 and 184 weight classes. He won two matches by fall and had two wins by major decision.
Bloomsburg will open its 2009-10 season with the Maroon and Gold Intrasquad match on Tuesday, Nov. 3 before traveling to Millersville for the Millersville Duals on Nov. 7.
