Moley Takes Second at Southern Scuffle


GREENSBORO, NC -- Bloomsburg University wrestler Matt Moley (Phoenixville/Spring-Ford) took second at the University of North Carolina Greensboro Southern Scuffle on Tuesday. As a team the Huskies finished in 12th place with a total of 53 points.

Moley, a 157-pounder, started his day with a 6-4 win over Kody Hamrah of North Carolina State, then posted a 7-0 win over Jedd Moore of Virginia in the semi-finals. Going against Edinboro's Gregor Gillespie in the championship bout, Moley, the second seed, dropped a 5-1 decision to the top-seed.

Taking fifth place at 165 pounds was Ricky Schmelyun (New Oxford/Bermudian Springs). Schmelyun started the day with an 8-6 loss to Matt Epperly of Virginia Tech in the quarterfinals. Dropping down to the consolation bracket, Schmelyun pinned Kyle Blevins of Appalachian State in 5:47 to move to the consolation quarters. He then lost 12-6 to Keegan Mueller of North Carolina, but came back to beat Obie Simpson of Kent State in the fifth place match with an 11-1 major decision.

At 125 pounds Ian Moser (Dover, DE/Caesar Rodney) and Matt Snyder (Lewistown/Lewistown) both dropped their first match of the day and were eliminated. At 133 pounds Jason Guffey (Muncy/Warrior Run) posted a 19-3 win over Scott Norris of NC State, then lost to Aaron Kalil of Navy, 7-6, and was eliminated. Ricky Donald (Millville/Millville) at 141 beat Derek Valent of Virginia in his opening match of the day, 4-0; then pinned David Ivashch of The Citadel in 1:26; but was eliminated with a 3-1 loss to Nick Nelson of Virginia. At 184 Brian Shaw (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg) started the day with a 6-4 win over Chris Dagget of Liberty, then fell to Mikal McKee of UNC-Greensboro, 15-7. At 197 pounds Eric Shaw (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg) was eliminated after losing to DJ Bruce of Virginia Tech, 12-2.

The Huskies return to action on Jan. 6 at Rider starting at 8 p.m.
