Huskies Fall to No. 23 Millersville on Senior Day
BLOOMSBURG - The Bloomsburg University women's basketball team dropped a close game, 56-47, to 23rd-ranked Millersville University on Saturday afternoon in their last Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division home game of the season.
Both teams struggled from the field in the first half as the Marauders built the initial lead of the game. The Huskies (14-10, 6-6), down 10-5 with 12:49, got back-to-back three's from sophomore guard Kelsey Gallagher (East Stroudsburg/East Stroudsburg South) and freshman guard Dana Wieller (Bethlehem/Liberty) to put the Huskies up 11-10 with 11:45 to go in the half. However, the visitors would make a comeback sparked by three Raquel Green layups to put the Marauders up 16-11 with 6:22 left on the clock. Bloomsburg responded with a 10-0 run notched off with a free throw from sophomore forward Kayla Oxenrider (Ashland/Tri-Valley) with 1:48 left to go. Millersville managed to get the lead back and ended the half on a layup from Jenna Craig to make the score 24-21 going into the break.
Millersville kept their lead for the first 12 minutes of the second half, going on a 10-0 run that was stopped by a Huskies layup from senior forward Giselle Lara (Toronto, ON/Archbishop Romero) with 12:28 on the clock. Bloomsburg rallied to tie things up, 36-36, on a layup from freshman forward Christine Sereta (Drums/Hazelton Area) with 7:37 left in the contest. Sereta hit a free throw to put the Huskies up one, 37-36. However, the Marauders went on a 12-2 run over the next three minutes to put them back on top. Bloomsburg was unable to make another run, and Millersville went on to win by nine points.
Bloomsburg got 15 points from Wieller along with four steals and three assists. Oxenrider had nine points and Gallagher added eight with six rebounds. Freshman guard Alyssa Flanagan (Freeland/Hazelton Area) had five points and eight assists for the Huskies. Millersville got 22 points from Green and 10 from Ashley Moyer.
Bloomsburg honored senior Giselle Lara and graduate student Jen Dervarics (Emmaus/Emmaus) before tip-off, their final game at Nelson Field House.
The Huskies play again Wednesday night at Mansfield in another PSAC match-up.
