Huskies Fall in OT in PSAC Quarterfinals
KUTZTOWN - Freshman forward Kayla Oxenrider (Ashland/Tri-Valley) scored 21 points and sophomore guard Kelsey Gallagher (East Stroudsburg/East Stroudsburg South) had a double-double but it wasn't enough as Bloomsburg University fell to Kutztown University in overtime, 74-67 in the quarterfinals of the 2010 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament on Tuesday night at the Keystone Arena.
The game started with both teams trading three-pointers as Rachel Wisemiller hit two for Kutztown and Gallagher getting one for the Huskies. The Golden Bears then opened up a 15-7 lead behind the play of Chauntelle Schroeder. The Huskies then went on a 10-0 run, taking a 17-15 lead on a layup by freshman forward Lauren Ellis (Bangor/Bangor) at the 10:13 mark of the first half.
Kutztown (19-9, 9-5) promptly tied the score 15 seconds later, but the Huskies responded by scoring 10 of the next 13 points to take a 27-20 lead with 6:10 left in the half. The Golden Bears fought back again, tying the game at 27-apiece on a layup by Melissa McQuade less than three minutes later. But Bloomsburg came back with back-to-back three-pointers by freshman guard Dana Wieller (Bethlehem/Liberty) and Gallagher to take a 33-31 lead into the locker room.
The Huskies struck first in the second half, taking a 35-31 lead, but Kutztown scored six of the next seven points to take a 37-36 advantage. Both teams then traded baskets, tying the score four times over a 3:24 span. After a jumper by Wieller knotted the score at 47-apiece with 12:39 left, Kutztown hit three straight three-pointers to take a 56-49 lead with 7:05 remaining. The Huskies cut the deficit to one after a layup by senior forward Giselle Lara (Toronto, ON/Archbishop Romero) 2:35 later, but found themselves down by three with 23 seconds left. Coming off of a screen, Oxenrider hit a three from the right wing with 10.8 seconds left on the clock to tie the score and send the game to overtime.
Kutztown hit a free throw 32 seconds into the overtime to take a one-point lead, but neither team scored until the Golden Bears got a jumper with 2:49 left to go up by three. A pair of free throws by freshman guard Alyssa Flanagan (Freeland/Hazleton Area) cut the deficit to one, but Kutztown went back on top by four after a three-pointer by McQuade. Another pair of free throws by the Huskies, this time from Oxenrider, made the score 66-64 with 1:45 remaining, but the Golden Knights began to pull away, hitting six free throws down the stretch to take the seven-point lead. They advance to play the nation's number one team, Gannon, in the semifinals.
Four players reached double-figures in scoring for Kutztown, led by McQuade who finished with 22 points and 15 rebounds. Oxenrider's point total was a season-high, as she went 5-of-10 from three-point range and 6-of-8 from the foul line and added seven rebounds. Gallagher had 11 points, 11 rebounds and five assists and Flanagan added 10 points, six rebounds and five assists for the Huskies.
The Huskies, whose usual starting lineup featured one sophomore and four freshmen, finished the season with a 16-11 record, going 8-6 in the PSAC East and reaching the conference tournament for the first time since the 2004-05 season.
