Women's Basketball Falls at the Buzzer at Nyack Tournament

Box Score

NYACK, NY-The Bloomsburg University women's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker to Dominican College, 80-79, on a buzzer-beating shot by the Griffins Rachelle Sainten on Friday night. The Huskies were playing in the first of two games at the Nyack Invitational.

Bloomsburg (1-1) was able to get out to a quick 6-1 lead with the help of two jumpers from freshman Christine Sereta (Drums/Hazleton). Dominican came back to quickly tie the score at six at the 16:27 mark in the first half. The Huskies later went on a 16-7 run over 3:24, highlighted by two three-pointers by freshman Dana Wieller (Bethlehem/Liberty), stretching their lead to 29-19.

The Griffins were able to battle back, closing gap to one before taking a 39-37 lead on a three-pointer by Lindsey Lopez with 3:21 left in the first half. Another triple by the Griffins a few minutes later would make their halftime lead 46-41.

The Huskies would start the second half out strong, going on a 14-4 run over the first 6:37, with three-pointers coming from both Wieller and sophomore Kelsey Gallagher (East Stroudsburg/East Stroudsburg South). They were able to stretch their lead to 69-63 with just under seven minutes remaining in the game. However, Dominican would chip away over the next 4:38, taking a 77-72 lead on the strength of 11 made free throws.

Bloomsburg would use a three-pointer by freshman Tanejha Smith (Allentown/William Allen) and foul shots by classmates Kayla Oxenrider (Ashland/Tri-Valley) and Alyssa Flanagan (Freeland/Hazleton) to tie the score with 1:06 remaining. After going one-of-one at the line, the Griffins took the lead before Oxenrider sank both of her free throws with 50 seconds remaining to take a 79-78 lead.

The Griffins would take two shots at the rim, missing both, before sending the Huskies to the foul line with eight seconds left. After missing both free throws, Dominican had one last look at the basket, getting the game-winner from Sainten.

Wieller, last week's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Freshman of the Week, led the Huskies in scoring with 21 points on 6-of-11 shooting, including nailing 4-of-5 from beyond the three-point line. Gallagher added 14 points, eight rebounds and three steals, while Smith and Oxenrider each scored 10 points for the Huskies.

Bloomsburg returns to the court on Saturday when they face Nyack College. Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m.
