Huskies Defeat Cheyney in PSAC Opener

Box Score

CHEYNEY-Sophomore guard Kelsey Gallagher (East Stroudsburg/East Stroudsburg South) and freshman guard Dana Wieller (Bethlehem/Liberty) combined for 48 points as Bloomsburg University defeated Cheyney 86-72 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East women's basketball opener for both schools on Wednesday evening. The win ended the Huskies two-game losing streak.

The score was knotted at four apiece nearly five minutes into the game until Wieller broke the tie with her first three-pointer of the game at the 15:08 mark. The Huskies (9-4, 1-0) would then go on a huge 23-3 run over the next 8:59 to take a 30-7 lead. Gallagher led Bloomsburg during the run with nine points while Wieller added six.

The Lady Wolves (3-9, 0-1) fought back, going on a 16-7 run to close the gap to 34-23 with 2:16 left before halftime. Bloomsburg would end the half strong, scoring six of the last seven points to take a 40-24 lead into the locker room.

Cheyney, led by Lutfiyya Muhammad, came out in the second half firing, three times narrowing the Huskies lead to 10 points in the first six minutes of action. But after a timeout, Bloomsburg would go on a 12-2 run capped by a pair of foul shots by Gallagher, to extend the lead to 57-37 with 10:42 remaining.

Cheyney whittled away at the Huskies lead, and with a pair of foul shots by Stephanie Orji, cut the deficit to 76-69 with 1:57 left in the game. The Bloomsburg defense clamped down for the remainder of the contest, allowing just three more points, and the Huskies connected on all of their foul shots down the stretch to take home the 14-point victory.

Wieller finished with a game-high 25 points, shooting 8-of-16 from the field, including 4-of-8 from three-point range. She also posted four steals in 37 minutes of action. Gallagher scored 23 points, connecting on 12-of-13 foul shots, adding seven rebounds and four assists in 39 minutes. Freshman forwards Kayla Oxenrider (Ashland/Tri-Valley) and Christine Sereta (Drums/Hazleton Area) were the other Huskies to score in double-figures, adding 13 and 11 points, respectively.

The Huskies return home this Saturday when they host West Chester in PSAC East action. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m. at the Nelson Field House.
