Perez and Dove Advance at ITA Nationals
MOBILE, AL-- The Bloomsburg University men's tennis duo of Fernando Perez (Center Valley/Southern Lehigh) and Ricky Dove (Port Matilda/State College) advanced to the semi-finals of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Small College National Championships in Mobile, AL on Thursday.
Perez and Dove faced off against Scott Bradley and Georgie Perez of Metro State in Colorado and posted a 6-4, 5-7, 11-9 win. The Huskies top duo, which had won the Atlantic Regional championship to reach Alabama, will now face the top-seeds in the event Andrey Boldarev and Alex Grubin of Concordia (NY) on Friday at 1:30 p.m. The winner of the match will move on to the championship match at 5 p.m. tomorrow, while the team that loses will play for third place at 3:30 p.m.
The ITA championships, administered by the ITA, dates back to 1986 and determines national champions for NCAA Divisions II and III, NAIA and Junior/Community College men's and women's singles and doubles during the first two-and-a-half days of play. Those champions then compete to become the overall national small college champs (for all divisions) on October 17-18 in the ITA "Super Bowl" of Small College Tennis.
Each small college division features eight singles players and eight doubles teams who earned spots into this national event by winning their respective Wilson/ITA Regional Championships held over the past three weeks throughout the country. All told, over 5,000 student-athletes competed in 64 regional tournaments to earn spots in the national event.
