Tennis Teams Competing at ITA Regionals
BLOOMSBURG - The Bloomsburg University men's and women's tennis teams are competing in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic Regionals at Bloomsburg this weekend. Play was suspended on Saturday due rain and will continue on Sunday morning.
In men's single play, Fernando Perez (Center Valley/Southern Lehigh) won both his matches to move on to the quarterfinals. Perez beat Stevie Michaels of Fairmont State 6-2, 6-1 and Doug Hornak of West Virginia Wesleyan, 6-1, 6-1. Ricky Dove (Port Matilda/State College) got only in one match before the rains came. Dove beat Dusan Zukovac of Bluefield State, 6-1, 6-4. Brandon Cummings (Tallahassee, FL/Chiles) also advanced with a first round win. Cummings beat Bobby Zerwick of Kutztown, 6-2, 7-5.
In doubles play, the team of Lee Wexler (Lafayette Hill/Plymouth-Whitemarsh) and Kyle Coliluori (Collegeville/Methacton) beat Heurich and Marnik of Mercyhurst, 8-4, to move on to the quarterfinals tomorrow. Also, Perez and Dove beat Dyer and Kapur of Bluefield State, 8-1 to move on to the quarters.
For the women in singles play, seven Huskies won opening round matches to advance. Kristin Bonito (Bridgewater, MA/Coyle-Cassidy) won 6-2, 6-0 over Amanda Kaufman, while Laura Sullivan (Dingman's Ferry/Delaware Valley) won 6-3, 6-2 over Samantha Coral of West Virginia Wesleyan. Katie Hasyn (Lansdale/North Penn) won 6-1, 6-1 over Kelly McBryant of IUP. In addition, Danielle Walsh (Fairfield/St. John Baptist) won 6-1, 6-3 over Devin Rombach of Clarion. Emily Palko (McMurray/Peters Township) moved on with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Alyssa Hackworth of Charleston with Andrea Malatesta (Berwick/Berwick) won 6-0, 6-0 over Megan Parsons of Mercyhurst. Alison Carney (Muncy/Warrior Run) had a first round bye and will see her first action tomorrow.
In doubles, the team of Sullivan and Malatesta won their opening round match 8-3, then fell in the second round.
