Shiko Homers Twice as BU Sweeps in Softball

CLARION-Nikki Shiko (Shamokin/Southern Columbia) homered twice in game one as the Bloomsburg University softball team went on to sweep Clarion University on Sunday by a scores of 6-1 and 11-2.

Shiko led off game one with a solo shot for the Huskies, but Clarion quickly tied it with a run of its own in the bottom of the first. Shiko then went deep for a second time in the fourth, this time a two-run shot, to put the Huskies in front 3-1. Bloomsburg would tack on two more runs in the sixth inning with Lacy Mauro (Jersey Shore/Jersey Shore) and Emily Young (Nescopeck/Central Columbia) driving in runs and would get its sixth run in the seventh when Mandy Leach (Mildford/Delaware Valley) singled, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Shen DeBaro (Milton/Milton).

Shavuan Fisher (Coplay/Allentown Central Catholic) went the distance to earn the win allowing just five hits, striking out 11 and walking just one.

In game two, the Huskies jumped out to a 5-0 lead after a half inning of play. Mandy Koch (Dauphin/Central Dauphin) had an RBI single and Jenna Hampton (Catawissa/Southern Columbia) a two-run homer for the Huskies who took advantage of two errors in the inning. After Clarion got a run back in the bottom of the first, the Huskies made it 6-1 in the second on an RBI single by Sam Pientack (Archbald/Valley View), then, made it 7-2 with a run in the third with Lori Neyhard (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia) picking up an RBI on a single.

Bloomsburg put the game away with three runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to win 11-2. Cait Paine (Lebanon/Lebanon) went the distance striking out three along the way.

The Huskies, now 23-3, 4-0 in the PSAC Central, host IUP on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
