John King Shatters BU 1000 Freestyle Record at PSAC Championships
MECHANICSBURG-Junior John King (Ridley Park/Ridley) broke his own school record in the 1000 free with a time of 9:39.70 as the Bloomsburg University men's and women's swim teams competed in day one of the 2010 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships on Thursday.
King took nearly 10 seconds off of his old record of 9:49.36, which was set in 2009, as he placed third overall. Senior Joe Bentz (York/York Suburban) came in 10th overall with a time of 10:06.06, and sophomore Tom Hayes (Collegeville/Perkiamen Valley) finished 15th with a time of 10:16.20. Three men also competed in the 100 fly time trials, as junior Juan Castaneda (Shamokin/Shamokin Area) finished with a qualifying time of 50.63, senior Michael Bierds (Malvern/West Chester East) came in with a time of 53.42 and sophomore Erik Stefferud (West Chester/West Chester Henderson) posted a time of 56.11.
On the women's side, freshman Bridget Hilferty (Royersford/Perkiomen Valley) was the top Bloomsburg finisher in the 1000 free with a time of 10:36.97, finishing 10th overall. Sophomore Brianne Globig (New Kensington/Plum) came in 14th with a time of 10:46.35 and sophomore Miranda Steel (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) came in 16th with a time of 10:47.69.
The championships continue Friday as preliminary heats begin at 10:00 a.m.
