Alumni Meet Held
Bloomsburg--Nearly 50 former swimmers from BU gathered together on the weekend of Oct 2-4 to take part in a BU Swimming Alumni Weekend 2009. It was the first official gathering of swimming alumni on campus since fellow alum Stu Marvin '78 assumed the coaching duties following the retirement of Dave Rider and the departure of R.J. Wojtylak.
The weekend began on Friday evening with the induction of Stephanie Humphries Campbell '95 into the BU Athletic Hall of Fame. Humphries Campbell became the 11th swimmer to be enshrined in the Hall of Fame following a standout career. The festivities continued with an Alumni Meet that took place on Saturday at the newly renovated pool at Nelson Field House. The meet featured both alumni and current members of the swim team divided into two teams: Maroon and Gold. The format saw everyone swimming 50's of each stroke with scoring set up by age groups so everyone who competed had a better opportunity to score for their respective team. This new format was won by the Gold Team 876.5 to 812.5.
Following the meet all visiting alumni gathered for a luncheon at Fenstemaker Alumni House. The President of Bloomsburg University, Dr. David Soltz and his wife Robbie were both in attendance and had a chance to meet and greet everyone. A wide range of classes, 1973 to 2009, were represented.
The weekend ended on Sunday afternoon with a Celebration of Life for former Bloomsburg Men's Swimming Coach, Eli McLaughlin, who passed away in July. Many of his former swimmers, faculty members, friends and family were in attendance. McLaughlin's coaching career spanned 24 years.
