Men and Women Swim Well at Kutztown Tri-Meet
KUTZTOWN- The Bloomsburg University men's and women's swim teams competed in a tri-meet at Kutztown University on Saturday. The women went 2-1 on the day, defeating Mansfield 221-35 and Edinboro 192-70 and falling to Kutztown 139.50-122.50. The men defeated Edinboro 140-117. Overall, 24 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference qualifiers came from this tri-meet, 15 from the women and nine from the men.
The women's 200 medley relay team of Ashley Carroll (Mohnton/Schuykill Valley), Madeline Barlow (Yardley/Pennsbury), Brittany McNeil (Oxford/Oxford Area), and Allie Reed (Selinsgrove/Selinsgrove) started the meet strong, taking first place with a time of 1:52.55. The Huskies swept both the 100 free and 200 free with Reed taking first in both events with times of 54.72 and 1:59.55.
Freshman Bridget Hilfterty (Royersford/Perkiomen Valley) took second in the 200 free with a time of 1:59.65 and Sarah Grawe (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) had a second place finish in the 100 free with a time of 55.88. Miranda Steel (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) took third in the 500 free with a time of 5:20.33. Kelsey Brooker (Stevens/Cocalico) rounded up the women's top finishers, swimming to first place in the 100 fly with a time of 1:01.90.
The men swept the 100 backstroke with Derek Straub (Sinking Spring/Wilson) taking first with a time of 55.33, Ryan Lightner (Lebanon/Cedar Crest) finishing second at 57.28 and Tyler DeLorenzo (State College/State College Area) finishing third with a time of 57.41. Freshman Jeremy Frey (Pipersville/Central Bucks East) took first in both the 200 free in 1:50.23 and the 200 back with a time of 2:00.97.
Juan Castaneda (Shamokin/Shamokin Area) broke a Kutztown pool record, finishing first in the 100 fly with a time of 52.97. Tim Dorsch (Schwenksville/Souderton Area) also had a first place finish for the Huskies, posting a time of 1:02.98 in the 100 breast. The Huskies also swept the 100 free with David Mancinelli (Plymouth Meeting/Westmont Hilltop) taking first in a time of 22.97 and Lightner taking second at 23.27. The men's 200 medley relay team of Lightner, Nick Ortlieb (North Wales/North Penn), Castaneda and Mancinelli finished first in a time of 1:40.82.
The Huskies will host Ithaca College next Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
