BU Men's Soccer Posts 1-1 Tie with St. Thomas Aquinas
BLOOMSBURG-Bloomsburg University played to a 1-1, double overtime tie with St. Thomas Aquinas in non-conference men's soccer action Wednesday night at Sports Stadium.
The Huskies (2-1-1) got on the scoreboard first when freshman Tyler Phillips (Ephrata/Ephrata) bounced a pass from fellow freshman Bryce Shaffer (Gettysburg/Gettysburg Area) into the net from 10 yards out.
Both teams employed up-tempo offenses throughout much of the first and second half, while Bloomsburg relied on timely defensive stops by senior Michael McGee (Wernersville/Conrad Weiser) and junior Tim Pfender (Langhorne/Neshaminy) to keep the one score advantage.
The Spartans applied more offensive pressure in the second half and had several chances at the goal, but senior goalie David Leiendecker (Easton/Easton) came up with key saves. In the final minutes, St. Thomas moved all players to the Huskies side of the field and was able to get an unassisted header by Jorge Mera with 30 seconds left in regulation to tie the score.
Bloomsburg pushed the Spartans in both overtimes and had a chance at the win with a one-on-one shot from Phillips with three seconds remaining but goalie Nicholas Croce was able to come away with the save.
Leiendecker went the entire 110 minutes in goal for the Huskies, recording 10 saves.
Bloomsburg returns to the pitch on Saturday at Shippensburg, the first of a five game road trip. The Huskies return home October 3 against the District of Columbia.
