Bloomsburg Men's Soccer Defeats Shippensburg 4-2
BLOOMSBURG-- The Bloomsburg University men's soccer team defeated the Shippensburg 4-2 on Saturday afternoon. The game was played in heavy rain.
Freshman Tyler Phillips (Ephrata/Ephrata) put the Huskies on the board first with his team-leading 10th goal of the season at the seven-minute mark. Less than 20 minutes later fellow freshman Bryce Shaffer (Gettysburg/Gettysburg Area) booted one past the goalie to put Bloomsburg on top 2-0.
With three minutes left in the first period, Shippensburg's Michael Celius scored to make it a 2-1 game at the half.
The Bloomsburg offense stepped up in the second half, putting up a total of 11 shots and scoring two more goals. At the 52-minute mark senior Eric Simonds (Sassamansville/Boyertown) punched in a goal off a penalty kick to put the Huskies up by two. Minutes later, Celius scored his second goal to bring Shippensburg back within one. Bloomsburg kept pressing offensively and was able to go back on top by two goals when freshman Alex Ruhfass (Newton/Council Rock North) took a pass from junior Tim Pfender (Langhorne/Neshaminy) found the back of the net to put the Huskies up 4-2.
Senior David Leiendecker (Easton/Easton) went all 90 minutes in the net for the Huskies recording three saves.
The Huskies 9-5-2, 4-2-1 in the PSAC East will host East Stroudsburg in their regular-season finale on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m.
