Britt Scores 23 in Overtime Loss to West Chester

Box Score

BLOOMSBURG- Senior guard Ruben Britt (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Regional) scored 23 points but Sam Scott's foul shot with 23 seconds remaining proved to be enough as Bloomsburg University fell to West Chester 78-77 in overtime in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at the Nelson Field House.

West Chester (10-4, 1-1) started the game with a quick three-pointer by Kehinde Roberts but the Huskies would respond, scoring the game's next eight points, with six coming from sophomore forward Larry Webster (Elkton, MD/Elkton). Both teams traded baskets throughout most of the first half, until the Huskies went on a 10-2 run over the final 4:06 to go into the locker room with a 39-31 lead.

The Huskies (6-8, 0-2) kept the pressure on West Chester in the second half, but the Golden Rams slowly chipped away at the Bloomsburg lead. After senior forward Adon El's (Philadelphia/St. John Neumann) layup made the Huskies advantage 63-57 with 7:10 left, West Chester went on a 9-3 run to tie the score at 66 apiece with 4:35 remaining in the game. With a dunk by Ralph Hegamin 1:19 later, the Golden Rams took a 70-67 lead. The Huskies took a 71-70 lead with 2:07 left after a layup by El and two free throws by Britt on consecutive trips down the floor. 32 second later, Harley Williamson put the Golden Rams back on top 72-71 with two free throws of his own and Daniel Elie gave West Chester a two-point lead with a foul shot with 38 seconds remaining.

Bloomsburg wasted little time, moving the ball down the court and tying the game with a layup by El with 22 seconds remaining. After a timeout, Kenneth St. George's three-point attempt with four seconds remaining was blocked by sophomore guard Trevon Johnson (Snow Hill, MD/Snow Hill) but Hegamin got the loose ball and put up a three at the buzzer but it was off the mark, sending the game to overtime tied at 73.

The Huskies took the first lead in overtime as Johnson knocked down two foul shots at the 3:20 mark. After the Golden Rams tied the game 1:07 later, foul shots by El and Britt put Bloomsburg back up on top 77-75 with 1:34 left. West Chester would again tie the game with a layup by Hegamin at the 1:12 mark. After a Huskies turnover and foul, Scott sunk one of two shots from the foul line, giving the Golden Rams a one-point lead. After working for a final shot, Britt's fade away from 10 feet out with three seconds left fell short.

Hegamin was one of four Golden Rams to score in double-figures, notching 21 points. Britt played 43 minutes, connecting on 7-of-13 shots and added six rebounds and five assists. Johnson scored 20 points in 40 minutes while El added 14 points and seven rebounds in his season debut.

The Huskies return to the court Wednesday when they host PSAC East rival East Stroudsburg. Tip-off is set for 7:30 at the Nelson Field House.
