Men's Basketball Drops Close Game to Slippery Rock

SLIPPERY ROCK-Bloomsburg University was edged by Slippery Rock University 69-64 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference men's basketball cross-over action on Saturday afternoon at the Morrow Field House.

The Huskies (0-2) fell behind when The Rock started off the game's first four minutes on a 12-4 run. Bloomsburg would battle back, going on a 13-5 run over 5:17 and tying the game at 17-apiece. Freshman Ed Hall (Spencerville, MD/Paint Branch) was the key contributor, scoring five of the team's points.

Slippery Rock would open up a 10-point lead over the next 8:26, aided by two three-pointers in the span of 1:05. The Huskies would narrow the gap to 37-29 just before half with two free throws by senior Ruben Britt (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Regional).

The Rock would stretch their lead to 11 at the 14:17 mark in the second half on the strength of back-to-back three-pointers. The Huskies would narrow the lead to seven before another triple would give Slippery Rock a 53-43 advantage with 12:28 remaining.Bloomsburg would then go on an 11-0 run over the next 2:17 to take a 54-53 lead. However, Slippery Rock would answer with another three to go back on top by two with just under nine minutes remaining in the game.

Both teams would trade baskets over the next four minutes, with the Huskies never falling behind by more than four points. A free throw by sophomore Larry Webster (Elkton, MD/Elkton) and tip-in less than a minute later would bring the Huskies to within one at 63-62 with 3:35 remaining.

The Rock, however, would hit their shots in the final minutes and play keep away before icing the game with two free throws with eight seconds remaining to get the victory.

Webster finished as Bloomsburg's leading scorer, netting 16 points on 7-of-13 shooting with seven rebounds, four assists and two blocks. Britt finished with 11 points and seven boards while Hall also added 11 points and nine rebounds for the Huskies.

Bloomsburg will take a week off before playing in its home opener on Monday, November 30 against Penn State-Hazleton. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
