Bloomsburg Falls to Cheyney in PSAC East Opener
CHEYNEY-The Bloomsburg University men's basketball team lost to Cheyney University, 73-52, in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division opener Wednesday night.
The Huskies held an early 4-0 lead in the game after Jesse Betar (Altoona/Altoona) opened the scoring with a three-pointer and Larry Webster (Elkton, MD/Elkton) hit one of two free throws. The Wolves rallied and tied the score a 9-all before going on an 8-0 run to grab a 17-9 lead with 9:17 to play in the first half.
Cheyney pushed the lead to 13 on three-pointer by Sharif Bray before the Huskies came back with two free throws from Earl Knight (Haddonfield, NJ/LEAP Academy) and a bucket from Ruben Britt (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Regional) to close back within nine points, 30-21, with three and half minutes to play before the break. The Wolves, though, closed out the half with an 11-3 run to lead 41-25 at the half.
In the second half the Huskies used a 5-0 run to get to within 11 points, 51-40, with 10:36 to play with Webster hitting a jumper and Greg Elliott (White Rock, British Columbia) getting two free throws and Trenton Epps (Frederick, MD/St. John's Prep) one. After Cheyney pushed the lead up to 17, Bloomsburg once again narrowed the lead to 11 with just over five minutes to play but could get no closer. Cheyney closed the game with a 14-4 run to win by 21.
Bloomsburg, 6-7, 0-1 in the PSAC East, got 10 points each from Trevon Johnson (Snow Hill, MD/Snow Hill), Britt and Webster. Cheyney, 7-6, 1-0 in the PSAC East, got a game-high 19 points from Bray.
The Huskies will host West Chester on Saturday at 3 p.m.
