Huskies Drop Season Opener
PHILADELPHIA-The Bloomsburg University men's basketball team dropped a 68-53 decision to Chestnut Hill College in its 2009-10 season opener in Philadelphia on Monday night.
The Huskies (0-1) got off to a good start, leading 6-1 in the game's first two minutes of action. The Griffins would rally back to take a 9-8 lead with a three-pointer by Mark DiRugeris at the 16:02 mark, but senior guard Greg Elliott (White Rock, British Columbia/Earl Marriott) would hit a three of his own, putting Bloomsburg back on top by two. Another three-pointer by sophomore guard Jesse Betar (Altoona/Altoona) and a put-back by Elliott would give the Huskies a 16-11 lead 6:33 into the first half.
Chestnut Hill would battle back, however, going on a 12-2 run over the next 8:05 to take a 23-18 lead with a little over five minutes remaining in the half. Freshmen Ed Hall (Spencerville, MD/Paint Branch) and Jamar Smack (State College/State College) would score 10 of the next 12 Huskies points, keeping the deficit at five, as the Griffins went into halftime with a 35-30 lead.
Chestnut Hill started the second half with a 12-4 run over the first 6:06, stopped by a layup and one by Betar. Another run, this one 11-4 over the next 5:35, would stretch the Griffins lead to 57-43 with eight minutes remaining. The Huskies would make it a 10-point game with 6:36 left, but could not pull any closer as Chestnut Hill pulled away down the stretch.
Sophomore forward Larry Webster (Elkton, MD/Elkton) nearly missed a triple-double in the loss, accounting for 12 points, 11 rebounds and nine blocks. Hall was Bloomsburg's high scorer, notching 13 points while bringing down six rebounds and three blocks.
The Huskies will next travel to Slippery Rock for a PSAC-crossover game on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m.
