Lacrosse Handles Molloy in Home Opener
BLOOMSBURG - Sophomore Samantha King (Elkton, MD/Northeast) and freshman Samantha Mazzie (Barto/Boyertown) scored three goals apiece as Bloomsburg University defeated Molloy 15-7 in the Huskies non-conference lacrosse home opener on Saturday afternoon at Sports Stadium.
King got Bloomsburg (4-1) on the board first with an unassisted goal 1:51 into the game. Senior Kim Springman (Downingtown/Bishop Shanahan) followed a little more than three minutes later with an unassisted goal of her own to give the Huskies a two-goal advantage. Bloomsburg continued its scoring spree, getting goals from senior Tia Mazzie (Barto/Boyertown), sophomore Allie Kakareka (Royersford/Spring-Ford), freshman Maggie Canavan (Erdenheim/Springfield), and King and Samantha Mazzie to take a 9-0 lead with 8:28 left in the first half.
Molloy stopped the Bloomsburg run when Alexa Toscano made the score 9-1 four minutes later, but the Huskies went back on top by nine when sophomore Lindsay Kupferschmidt (Royersford/Spring-Ford) found the back of the net with 26 seconds remaining before halftime.
The Huskies opened up the second half with goals by Kakareka, Canavan and Springman to take a 13-1 lead with 15:15 left in the game. Molloy came back with two quick goals to bring the deficit back to 10 before a goal by freshman Amber Shifflet (Pasadena, MD/Chesapeake) put the Huskies up 14-3 with 9:04 remaining.
Molloy then scored four goals in a little over four minutes to cut Bloomsburg's lead to 14-7 before Samantha Mazzie put the finishing touches on the victory when she found the back of the net with 38 seconds left.
Seven Huskies scored goals, including Kakareka who had two goals and two assists. Freshman Shelby Iezzi (Pottstown/Owen J. Roberts) went nearly 50 minutes in goal for the Huskies, registering 17 saves.
Bloomsburg will next host conference rival Millersville on Monday at 4:00 p.m.
