Bloomsburg Lacrosse Holds on For Win
BELMONT,NC-Freshman Sam Mazzie (Barton/Boyertown) scored four goals and had two assists to lead the Bloomsburg University lacrosse team to a 14-12 win over Belmont-Abbey on Monday afternoon in North Carolina.
The Huskies wasted little time in getting on the board scoring just eight seconds in the game when Kim Springman (Downingtown/Bishop Shanahan) scored off a Natalie Draham (Blue Bell/Wissahickon) assist. Bloomsburg made it 2-0 just 22 seconds later with Sam Mazzie scoring on a free position shot.
After Belmont-Abbey cut the lead to 3-2 five minutes into the game, the Huskies scored four straight goals and five of seven to lead 8-4 at the break. Sam Mazzie had two of the Huskies five goals and also assisted on sister Tia Mazzie's (Barton/Boyertown) goal.
Bloomsburg opened the second half with four straight goals, including two by Allie Kakareka (Royersford/Spring-Ford), to grab an 11-4 lead with less than 20 minutes to play. Belmont-Abbey though rallied scoring eight of nine goals over the next 13 minutes to make it a 13-12 game with 6:46 to go.
The Huskies would stay on top by one goal till freshman Maggie Canavan (Erdenheim/Springfield) scored with 1:48 to play to clinch the victory for Bloomsburg.
Kakareka finished with three goals and one assist, while Canavan and Springman each added two goals. Five players scored two goals each for Belmont-Abbey, 1-4.
The Huskies,2-0, play at Pfeiffer, NC on Thursday at 11 a.m.
