Bloomsburg Field Hockey Opens Season with 5-0 Win
BLOOMSBURG-Senior Chelsea Due (Pen Argyl/Pen Argyl) scored two goals and assisted on another as Bloomsburg University opened up the 2009 season with a 5-0 victory over visiting Houghton College at Sports Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Huskies (1-0), three-time defending national champions, opened up the scoring 11:49 into the first half on a rocket by Due that found its way to the back of the net. Bloomsburg made it 2-0 when senior Breann Tobin (Perkasie/Pennridge) put one past the goalie with just over five minutes remaining in the first half.
Due started the second half scoring less than two minutes in when she found the back of the cage off of a penalty corner from junior Ashley Miller (Shermans Dale/West Perry). 15 minutes later, senior Erin Hench (Loysville/West Perry) took a pass from senior Kacy Friend (Nazareth/Pen Argyl) and put it past the goalie, making the score 4-0. Sophomore Amanda Riley (Tannersville/Pocono Mountain East) finished off the scoring five minutes later when she netted a nice pass from Due.
Senior Caitlin Koczynski (Yardley/Neshaminy) started in goal and went the first 52 minutes for the Huskies before giving way to freshman Meghan Hollenbach (Blandon/Fleetwood). Emily VanEenwyk went the distance in the cage for the Highlanders.
The Huskies remain home as they host Stonehill on Sunday, August 30 at noon.
