Bloomsburg Falls at West Chester

WEST CHESTER--The Bloomsburg University football dropped its second straight game falling 30-14 to West Chester on Saturday afternoon.

The Huskies (8-2, 5-2 PSAC East) started quickly in the game stopping the Golden Rams (6-4, 5-2 PSAC East) on their opening drive of the game, then, quickly scoring on its first possession. After forcing West Chester to go three and out on its first series, the Huskies took over at their own-42 yard line. On second and nine, quarterback Dan Latorre (Elysburg/Southern Columbia) connected with Cory Stiger (Williamsport/Loyalsock Twp) on a 57-yard touchdown strike putting Bloomsburg on top 7-0 just 1:26 into the game.

West Chester responded on its next possession and put together a 11-play, 77-yard drive capped by a one-yard run from Lee Hopkins to tie the game at 7-7 with 7:57 to play in the first period. The Huskies regained the lead at 14-7 on its next drive moving 60-yards in eight plays with Latorre connecting with Stiger on a seven-yard pass for the go-ahead score. A big play in the drive was a 35-yard completion from Latorre to Ben Weaber (Lebanon/Cedar Crest) giving the Huskies a first and goal at the six-yard line.

The Golden Rams tied the game at 14-14 on its ensuing drive quarterback Joe Wright hitting Dan DePalma with a 38-yard scoring pass with 13:01 to go in the first half.

Later in the second period after a short punt by the Huskies gave West Chester the ball at its own 41-yard line, the Golden Rams needed just eight plays to get a four-yard run from D'Andre Webb to grab the lead at 21-14. On Bloomsburg's next drive Latorre was intercepted by Kevin Garland who returned the ball 25-yards to the Huskies 40-yard line. After driving to the Bloomsburg four-yard line and facing fourth down, Wright hit DePalma with a four-yard pass for a 28-14 lead at halftime.

In the second half the Huskies drove into West Chester territory four times, but missed on 32-yard field goal try and fumbled at three-yard line with 12 seconds to play.

Latorre finished 18-36 for a career-high 350 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Mike Varanavage (Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan) made 12 tackles to lead the defense, while Anthony Smith (Pottstown/Pottstown) added 11. Joe Wright finished 23-38 for 326 yards and two scores for West Chester.

Bloomsburg will host Gannon University on Saturday in the regular-season finale with kickoff set for noon at Redman Stadium.
