Anthony Smith Named PSAC East Defensive Player of the Week

BLOOMSBURG-- Bloomsburg University linebacker Anthony Smith (Pottstown/Pottstown) was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division Defensive Player of the Week for the period ending Aug. 29.

Smith, a 5-9, 227 pound linebacker, made a career 11 tackles, including five solo stops, and registered a half sack for a loss of two yards that helped the 13th-ranked Huskies past 15th-ranked Ashland, 10-7, in the season opener. Smith helped the Bloomsburg defense hold the Eagles to just 261 yards of total offense and 4-of-15 on third downs and 0-for-6 on fourth downs in the victory. Playing against an offense that averaged over 400 yards per game and nearly 35 points per game last year, he was involved in several key plays in the game, including making an assisted stop on a 3rd-and-1 play in the second quarter to force an Ashland punt, and later in the quarter assisted on tackles on back-to-back plays as Bloomsburg stopped Ashland on the one-yard line on three straight plays to keep them out of the end zone.

Bloomsburg, 1-0, will play at California (PA) on Saturday at 7 p.m.
