Bloomsburg University Football Elects Captains For 2009 Season
BLOOMSBURG -The Bloomsburg University football team has chosen its captains for the 2009 football season. Representing the Huskies will be quarterback Dan Latorre (Catawissa/Southern Columbia) , cornerback Jesse Cooper (Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) and fullback Stefan Adams (West Chester/West Chester East) .
Latorre, a senior who will play in 2009 as a graduate student, is two-two time All-PSAC selection who has started 37 consecutive games for Bloomsburg. Latorre has thrown for 5,658 career yards and 49 touchdowns in his career, placing him third in school history in both categories entering 2009. Latorre also rushed for 545 yards and seven touchdowns last season, averaging 6.5 yards per carry. He became the first Bloomsburg quarterback to rush for 100 yards in a game with his 125 yard outing against Shippensburg. "Danny is an outstanding leader both on and off the field," said Huskies head coach Danny Hale. "He is a triple major with honors, and sets a terrific example both in academics and athletics. Having Danny under center is like having a coach on the field."
Cooper, a senior, had a remarkable 2008 season. He was named first-team All-PSAC as both a defensive back and a specialist. Cooper finished the regular season with 38 tackles to go along with nine passes broken up and four interceptions, two of which he returned for touchdowns. Cooper also led the PSAC and ranked in the top ten nationally in kick return average at over 30 yards per attempt. He was named Division II Player of the Year by the Touchdown Club of Southern New Jersey. "Jesse is a great selection as captain," said Hale "He is a superior athlete who plays with great confidence. He inspires his teammates with his infectious personality. He is an asset to our program."
Adams, a senior, has rushed for 757 yards and 15 touchdowns in his Huskies career. A highly valued blocker as well as a runner, Adams has started 23 games at Bloomsburg. "Stefan has been a leader since starting as a true freshman," said Hale. "He is an outstanding team player and a character man. Stefan is one of our spiritual leaders and many players seek him for advice. He is mature beyond his years and I understand why he was elected a captain."
Bloomsburg will hold its annual spring football game Friday, April 17th at 6:00 p.m. at Robert B. Redman Stadium.
The Huskies open the 2009 season Thursday, August 27th against Ashland.
