Huskies Win 2010 Season Opener
HAMPTON, VA-Junior Joey Ianiero (Bloomsburg/Rutgers) had four hits and four RBI has Bloomsburg University opened its 2010 baseball season with a 16-13 win over The Apprentice School at the Builder Invitational at War Memorial Stadium in Hampton, Virginia.
The Huskies got on the scoreboard quickly as Ianiero opened the game with a double down the left field line and then scored on a throwing error as he was stealing third base. The Builders countered with four runs in the bottom of the first to take 4-1 lead.
Bloomsburg knotted up the score in the third with the help of good base running. Junior Ryan Nanni (Norristown/Delaware) scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Tony Donofry (Newtown/Council Rock North) and then freshman Devin McLaughlin (Bloomsburg/Univ. of Pittsburgh) came home on a double steal with junior Gino Wise (Mechanicsburg/Mechanicsburg/Del. Tech CC). Wise then scored from second on a single by sophomore Jarrod Kramer (Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain).
The Huskies then picked up six more runs in the fourth, combining for six hits, to take a huge 10-4 lead. Senior Scott Kacelowicz (Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain/Kutztown), McLaughlin, Ianiero and Wise all picked up run scoring hits. The Apprentice School then picked up a run in the bottom half of the fourth, four runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to tie the score back up at 10-apiece.
Bloomsburg responded in the eighth, getting RBI hits from Ianiero, Donofry and junior Jerry Lloyd (Mifflinburg/Allegany College) to go up 14-10. The Huskies then added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth and allowed three in the bottom half to take the victory.
Ianiero and McLaughlin each had two doubles while Donofry went 1-for-4 with a double and three RBI and a run scored. Senior Chris Tressler (Lewistown/Lewistown) got the start on the mound, going five innings and picking up the win.
The Huskies take the field again on Friday morning as they face Briarcliffe College. First pitch is scheduled for 9:00 a.m.
