Kernaghan Tosses Shutout; Huskies Split
Box Score Game One
Box Score Game Two
NEWBERRY, SC-- The Bloomsburg University baseball team split a pair of games on Monday against Newberry College in Newberry, SC winning the opener 1-0 and dropping the nightcap by a 1-0 score. The games were the first for the Huskies on their spring trip after rained forced postponement of both Saturday and Sunday's games.
In the opener of the twinbill Grant Kernaghan (Upper Darby/Upper Darby) allowed six hits and struck out five in the complete game shutout for Bloomsburg, moving his record to 2-0 on the season.
Bloomsburg led off the fourth with seeing-eye singles through the left side from Nick Ferdinand (Bensalem/Archbishop Ryan) and Kevin Ward (Clifton Heights/Monsignor Bonner). A groundout from Tyler Gansner (Lancaster/Lampeter-Strasburg) put the pair in scoring position and an RBI groundout by Mike Austin (Dallastown/Dallastown) put the Huskies up, 1-0.
Kernaghan worked out of a bases loaded jam in the fifth inning for the Huskies to preserve the shutout for the Huskies.
In game two the Huskies got just four hits in losing 1-0. The Huskies had a couple of different scoring chances, but could not get anything across the plate. Bloomsburg had two on with one out in the second; runners at second and third with one out in the fourth; and got a two-out double from Tony Donofry (Newtown/Council Rock North) in the fifth, but each time Newberry worked out of the jam. Vinny Voorhees (Lakaska/New Hope-Solebury) was the tough-luck loser for the Huskies going six innings, while striking out nine, walking two and allowing just three hits. The lone run in the game was scored in the second inning when the first two batters singled for Newberry, moved to second and third on a bunt and scored on sac fly.
Bloomsburg, 3-4, will play at Benedict (SC) College on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
