Donofry's Walk-Off Single Leads Bloomsburg Baseball to Split
BLOOMSBURG-- Tony Donofry (Newtown/Council Rock North) went 3-5 with six RBI, including a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning to lead the Bloomsburg University baseball team to a 9-8 victory over Mansfield in game two of a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon. The Huskies dropped the opener to the Mounties by a score of 8-4.
In game one, The Huskies took a 2-0 lead in the second inning, as Nick Ferdinand (Bensalem/Archbishop Ryan) and Bill Phillips (Shahola/Delaware Valley) both drove in runs to give the Huskies the early advantage. Mansfield would respond with a five-run third inning to go up 5-2 after three. The Huskies would draw back within one in the fifth. Kevin Ward (Clifton Heights/Monsignor Bonner) doubled driving in Donofry followed by a Jarrod Kramer (Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) single to drive in Ward made the score 5-4 after five innings. Mansfield would pull away, however, scoring three runs in the top of the sixth inning to seal the victory. Mitch Troy (Elkton, MD/Cecil College) (4-3) picked up the loss for Bloomsburg.
In game two, Mansfield would race out to a 5-0 lead after one inning, but the Huskies would rebound in the second. Donofry would hit a two-out grand slam in the bottom of the second to cut the Mansfield lead down to one, 5-4 after two innings. Bloomsburg would strike again in the fourth inning when Donofry hit an RBI double and would later score, capping a three-run fourth inning and putting the Huskies ahead 7-5. Mansfield would retake the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, but a Mike Austin (Dallastown/NW Shoals JC) RBI double in the bottom of the sixth inning knotted the game at 8-8. Neither team could score in the seventh, sending the game to extra innings. After holding Mansfield scoreless in the top of the eighth inning, Chris Haagen (New Britain/CB West) led off the inning with a single, with Phillips replacing him as a pinch runner. After a sacrifice by Anthony Forman (Richboro/Council Rock South) Donofry capped a brilliant day with his one-out, game winning single.
With the split, Bloomsburg improves to 13-21, 4-12 in the PSAC East. Bloomsburg returns to action on Friday when they host Kutztown. The doubleheader gets underway at 1:00 p.m.
