Huskies Split with Lock Haven

LOCK HAVEN--Mike Austin (Dallastown/Dallastown) doubled home Kevin Ward (Clifton Heights/Msgn. Bonner) with the game winning run in the top of the ninth inning to lead Bloomsburg University to a 6-5, extra-inning win over Lock Haven in college baseball action on Tuesday. In the nightcap, Lock Haven rallied for a 9-8 win.

In game one the teams went to extra innings tied at 4-4. In the eighth inning Carlos Medina (Lititz/Manheim Central) hit a solo homer to put the Huskies in front 5-4. However, the Bald Eagles got the run back in their half of the inning to send the game to the ninth. In the ninth with one out, Ward drew a walk, then scored on a double from Austin to give the Huskies a 6-5 lead. In the bottom of the ninth, Keith Meyer (Richboro/Council Rock South) retired Lock Haven in order to get the save in relief of Nick Ferdinand (Bensalem/Archbishop Ryan). Medina went 3-5 with two runs scored to lead Bloomsburg.

In game two the Huskies jumped to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first with Ward getting an RBI double and Medina and Ferdinand driving in runs after both getting hit by a pitch. After LHU got a run back in the second, the Huskies made it 6-1 with three runs in the top of the fourth. The Bald Eagles got a run back in the bottom of the fourth before Bloomsburg's Scott Kacelowicz (Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) hit a solo shot to make it a 7-2 game. But, Lock Haven scored five times in the fifth and one in the sixth to lead 8-7 going to the top of the seventh. In the top of the seventh the Huskies tied the game on an RBI single by Kacelowicz, However, in the home half of the seventh Lock Haven got the game winning run on a single by Mark Strouse. Kacelowicz went 2-4 with two RBI to pace the Huskies.

Bloomsburg goes to 12-18 with the split and will play at Mansfield on Friday at 1 p.m. in a doubleheader.
