Grant Kernaghan Tosses Shutout As Bloomsburg University Gets Split

BLOOMSBURG -- Grant Kernaghan (Upper Darby/Upper Darby) threw a four-hit shutout and as the Bloomsburg University baseball team split a twinbill with Kutztown on Friday afternoon. The Huskies won the opener 1-0, then, dropped game two by a score of 7-5.

In game one, Kernaghan was in control from the start retiring eight in a row at one point. When a runner did reach base for Kutztown, Kernghan's defense was solid behind him. The Huskies turned three double plays in the game and also threw out a runner trying to steal. Overall, Kernaghan, now 4-3 on the season, struckout five and walked just one.

The only run of the game came in the fifth inning when Nick Ferdinand (Bensalem/Archbishop Ryan) led off with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Corey Eisenhart (York/Dover/Hagerstown CC). and scored on an RBI single by Tony Donofry (Newtown/Council Rock North).

In game two, Kutztown took an early lead in the game with four runs in the first, then made it 5-0 with a run in the fifth. The Huskies got two runs back in the bottom of the fifth. Ferdinand led off with a single and scored on a triple by Scott Kacelowicz (Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain). Later in the inning Kacelowicz scored on a ground out by Anthony Forman (Richboro/Council Rock South).

Kutztown made it 7-2 with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh before the Huskies made things close in the bottom of the seventh. Jarrod Kramer (Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) led off the Huskies half of the seventh with a homer, then Ferdinand reached on an error and Kacelowicz walked. Both runners advanced on a passed ball before Forman drove in a run with a ground out and Donofry singled in Kacelowicz. Bloomsburg did have the tying run at the plate, but a strikeout ended the game.

Bloomsburg goes to 14-22, 5-13 with the split. The Huskies and Golden Bears are scheduled to play on Saturday at 1 p.m.
