Professional sales one of nation’s best

BLOOMSBURG — Bloomsburg University is named among the top North American schools in the 2016 Sales Education Foundation’s (SEF) listing of the best universities offering professional sales education. BU is one of only four Pennsylvania institutions included in the listing.

Monica Favia, chair and assistant professor of marketing, said SEF recognizes institutions for elevating the sales profession through university education. “This recognition will help our students to secure professional sales positions,” she said. BU’s professional sales in marketing specialization began in 2015.

According to SEF, while employment rates remain flat for recent college graduates, many university sales programs report placement rates above 95 percent for their sales students, with some reporting 100 percent placement. Starting salaries for professional sales representatives average over $60,000.

“These figures are representative of the experience of sales graduates from BU,” Favia said.

BU’s program also was honored at the National Collegiate Sales Competition (NCSC), advancing to 22nd out of 67 universities. Graduate students Connor Gades of Bloomsburg and Bryan McCall of Lititz placed third in the team sell competition and Maura Kranzel, a senior from Harrisburg, qualified for the quarter finals. At the International Collegiate Sales Competition held each November, BU has finished in the top 10 out of 60 universities for the last three years. 

BU hosted its first internal sales competition this year, sponsored by UPS. Sixteen BU students and two students from Husson University, Bangor, Maine, presented 15-minute role plays as UPS salespeople calling on an automotive parts manufacturer. The final three were BU students: junior Alexander Fuchsman, Bloomsburg, first; Kranzel, second; and sophomore Joshua Salak, Harrisburg, third.

BU’s professional sales program, the only program of its kind in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, is available as a specialization with a marketing major or as a minor.

Bloomsburg University is one of 14 universities in Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education. The university serves approximately 10,000 students, offering comprehensive programs of study in the colleges of Education, Business, Liberal Arts and Science and Technology.
