Visiting author shares the art of leaving

For Immediate Release:  March 17, 2015

BLOOMSBURG— Domenica Ruta, author of the memoir, “With or Without You,” adds an unusual coming-of-age twist to Bloomsburg University’s Big Dog Reading Series on Tuesday, March 24 with a craft talk at 2 p.m. in KUB 345 and ending with a reading at 7 p.m. in McCormick Center 1303.

Ruta offers a glimpse into the life of a troubled child, one who must eventually face the difficult necessity of leaving everything behind to move on.

Born and raised in Danvers, Mass., Ruta grew up in a working-class, Italian town under the guardianship of a mother addicted to drugs. As their lives fluctuated between high and low times, Ruta’s mother was determined to instill one thing in her daughter’s mind – an appreciation for art. With art, Ruta would learn, one could uncover the means for escape. One could find that there was more to life than disorder and misfortune.

Ruta received her Master of Fine Arts degree from Michener Center for Writers at the University of Texas, Austin. She was a finalist for the Keene Prize for Literature and has received residencies at Yaddo, the MacDowell Colony, the Blue Mountain Center, Jentel and Hedgebrook.

Bloomsburg University is one of 14 universities in Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education. The university serves approximately 10,000 students, offering comprehensive programs of study in the colleges of Education, Business, Liberal Arts and Science and Technology.
